A Time of Liturgical Renewal
This is an exciting time for the Church in the United States. Beginning next
month, on the First Sunday of Advent, we will be praying a new translation of
the texts of the Mass. For the next four Sundays, we will be illustrating for
you these new texts through bulletin inserts and bulletin columns.
“Why is the Church changing the texts of the Mass?” is the first question many
people have asked. To answer the question properly we have to look back at what
the Second Vatican Council hopes to accomplish in its liturgical renewal. Even
though it has been forty years since the Council, the Church has taken just
“baby steps” in what the Council hoped to achieve.
You may remember that, immediately following the Council, we prayed the “old
Mass” (with the priest still with his back to the altar) in English. Only in
1969 was the New Order (Novus Ordo) of the Mass introduced. You may also
remember that there was very little teaching of the renewed texts to the people.
We are embarking on the revision of these same texts. Mass, in the vernacular,
will be celebrated using different words, words that are theologically more
precise; words that better express what it is that we believe. It is not what we
have been praying has been wrong, but like many areas of our life, it may be
time for us to look again and hone our skills at worship. It is our hope that in
the next four weeks, all the Catholic faithful of our diocese will gain a better
understanding of the Mass, a deeper appreciation of the Eucharist, and a greater
zeal to worship God with their whole minds and hearts.

Dear Padre
What are the Torah, the Talmud, and the Qur’an?
What is the difference between the Torah, the Talmud, and the Qur’an?
Luis
Dear Luis,
The Torah and the Talmud are key texts of Judaism, while the Qur’an is the key
text of Islam.
Catholics are familiar with the Jewish Torah because it’s made up of the first
five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
When Christian Scriptures refer to “the law,” they’re speaking of the Torah. The
Torah, the Nevi’im (the Prophets), and the Ketuvim (the Writings) constitute the
Tanakh – the Hebrew Bible – which Christians generally refer to as the Old
Testament.
The Talmud is a later collection of Jewish texts that record and reflect on
Jewish law as it became codified, promoted, and discussed by its rabbis. While
the written Talmud was generally composed between 200 and 600, it draws on more
ancient oral traditions.
Muslims believe the Qur’an is the inspired word of God, a divine message brought
to the prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel in the seventh century. The Qur’an
presumes knowledge of both Christian and Jewish Scriptures, but it differs in
such key matters as whether Jesus is the Son of God.
Christians regard the Torah as the inspired word of God, but not the Talmud or
the Qur’an.

Liturgy for the Diocese, is coming to St. Joan’s to offer a presentation on the

Advent. His presentation will include what the changes will be and why. This is
an opportunity for us to understand the changes and make them more meaningful to

in what is now South Sudan.
